Throwing peanuts at the walls of Jericho

Posted: Friday, May 25, 2007 2:36 PM by Will Femia

Everywhere I look I run into a campaign to save the CBS TV show Jericho.  I was a regular viewer of Jericho, though the idea (major American cities are nuked and a small Midwest town is left to figure out what happened and how to survive) was always more interesting than the actual execution. It would make (and has made) a better book than a TV show.  Anyway, the strangest protest I've seen (for this or pretty much any other cause) has been the Nuts about Jericho campaign.  They're collecting money to send "deeply discounted peanuts" to CBS as a protest. And it's working out to be literally tons of peanuts PER DAY. I wonder if I can see them if I go to the CBS building.  What the heck is CBS going to do with them?

Speaking of aggregating small contributions into a giant effort, reCaptcha hopes to harvest a few seconds from online users to digitize books.  Captcha is what they call the security device that asks you to type the squiggly letters you see on forms like blog comments.  The idea is that spam programs can't read the letters.  But the idea with reCaptcha is that instead of random squiggly letters you have pieces of text that didn't scan well in the course of digitizing a book.  So answering the captcha helps edit the scanned text.

Speaking of the falling walls of Jericho, "George Lucas, creator of "Star Wars," has never hesitated to protect his intellectual property, which is why some call him "Lucas the Litigator." But this week, his Lucasfilm plans to make clips of "Star Wars" available to fans on the Internet to mash up -- meaning to remix however they want -- at will."  I don't know if this is one of those free Wall Street Journal pieces but you might find a bootleg version if you google the headline. I got an embargoed press release from Eyespot on the story.  Here it is on PRWeb. In short, Lucasfilm figured out that if you can beat 'em, join 'em. Funny line: "Eyespot has set up a program to make sure none of the doctored clips contain nudity, pornography, and the like. As a backup, a team of screeners based in Costa Rica will watch each video before it goes live." Can you imagine a job that requires watching Star Wars fan mash-ups to police for porn?

In a time when the slightest suspicion by a neighbor or a TSA agent can have to detained in legal limbo for days or weeks or more, maybe it's not such a bad idea to engage in a bit of alibi blogging.

Dynamic architecture - The floors turn.  I guess this isn't totally revolutionary (no pun) because rotating restaurants aren't unheard of - just not a whole building of them.  But do check out the construction tab.

There's one part in this Slashdot item about Googling for credit card numbers that really raised my hair: "For each of the four major card companies, I called their security departments and reported two of the cards that I had found compromised, and then a week later, called the cardholders themselves to see if the card companies had notified them. Surprisingly, of the four companies, American Express was the only one whose customers in this experiment, when I called them a week later, said that AmEx had contacted them and told them to change their numbers."

"Journalists and technologists don't understand each other." After reading this I have a neck ache from nodding so much.  It's about this new Medill journalism program that proposes to turn technologists into journalists or vice versa. In the media shift to the Web, very little has been said about journalists learning new technical skills. We see a lot about the change in mindset and use of new tools, but very few journalists bother to learn the nitty gritty of programming.  I wonder if they'll offer any of this for online audit.

That credit card story was scary. I what they described, and found a list of names, birthdates, SSN's, CC #s, the three-digit verification codes, and, for some of them, the numbers on their bank accounts. ACK! None of them were mine.
The local radio station had an interview with the president of nutsonline.com, the place most people are getting their nuts from. Apparently their "finely roasted products" will be sent by CBS to troops over in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Will, Your headline regarding the Volokh Conspiracy is incorrect. Volokh is referring to a case of two young girls in Illinois who posted fliers around their school of two male students kissing with the words "God Hates Fags" underneath. They are not connected with the Westboro Baptist group in Kansas.
Will, this whole lolcat thing has me intrigued. I personally think they are hilarious (I'm in your Louisiana Purchase, Manifesting Destiny had me in stitches)... but I started to wonder where these came from. If your readers are really interested... Wikipedia does have a little bit of information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lolcats They are known also as 'Image Macros'. I'm just doin' my part to keep the Clicked audience as hip as possible... because I fear the day I see something in pop culture and say "What is that? You call that funny! In my day we had Jim Carey and Adam Sandler and I don't recall anyone complaining!"
Love the nuts thing! I don't watch jericho, but I dontated on befalf of my fav show that was cancelled, Invasion.
Regarding the Big Brother link above: This is just another reason why I completely despise all forms of reality tv. The entire concept is exploitation at its worse and the only people who profit are the studios. The fact that they are so popular and still keep getting churned out in various forms is the saddest commentary on our culture here in the States and our human society in general I can think of today. There was a model show a couple years back and one of the contestants had just learned that her best friend was dead. The very next game for elimination was to be the last person standing in a grave at a real cemetery.
Thank you for mentionting our Save Jericho movement, it means a lot to us. The fans are fighting for a new generation of TV, downloading/recording things rather that watching them on TV directly (TiVo,innertube, itunes, etc.) And were not only fighting with nuts... This movement has grown in a matter of days. Who can tell what we can accomplish within a month. thanks again. M. Thordarson

Allen, my understanding was that they actually believe that message, which is close enough for me to call them jerks.  You're right though, they're not those particular jerks. I almost never write about Phelps because I don't want to give his cause any energy, but I ofen wonder how far his appeal reaches.

Randall, Anil Dash did a nice review of it not too long ago. http://www.dashes.com/anil/2007/04/cats-can-has-gr.html (second item in my April 27th post http://clicked.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2007/04/27/173260.aspx) -- by the way, it turns out putting "booty poppin'" in the headline of a blog post is really good for search engine random hits.

M.Thordarson, if nothing else you'll accomplish the export of a heck of a lot of peanuts.  I have a hard time imagining network executives saying, "wow, they sure sent a lot of peanuts, we should put the show back on."  That said, you make a good point about Web spin-offs.  If ever there was a time to experiment, this might be it (depending on how much the production cost of the show is).  My question to you is, if CBS just ignores you until you go away, will you change your mind about the effectiveness of Web campaigns?

Veronica, how the heck are we going to explain a site like that to the aliens?

Hi Will, The benefits of lying to yourself have been lauded by the Church of the SubGenius for decades. The value of "pulling the wool over your own eyes" cannot be overstated. Thank you for highlighting the fight to Save Jericho! The fight to save Jericho is a war against Reality TV and a battle cry for a public recognition of the New Media Revolution. CBS is planning to replace Jericho with yet another reality show. Some of us care about quality scripted programming. Reality TV is dumbing down our world. The fans are legion and dedicated. Jericho is the quality scripted programming that the public is craving. The fight is not about quick-fix closure for a show we love. It is about Networks owning up to who their real audience is and being accountable. We live in a multi-media world, a world in which Nielsen Ratings are clearly antiquated. DVRs and Downloads are the new platform for viewing. Count us! The Hollywood Reporter reported that Jericho finished 48th with 9.5 million viewers per Nielsen. The following renewed shows: Bones, Prison Break, Las Vegas, Law & Order, My Name is Earl, Law & Order CI, Simpsons, Medium, How I Met Your Mother, Men In Trees, The Office, Family Guy, Till Death, Scrubs, Friday Night Lights, 30 Rock, King of the Hill and Notes from the Underbelly all finished with lower Season Average ratings. Even by Nielsen standards, CBS's decision makes no sense. Save Jericho! Nuts to CBS!
There are videos on YouTube of the nuts going to CBS. Just search Jericho Nuts and I'm sure it'll pop up. CBS will be donating the nuts to the zoo, homeless shelters, and a charity that supports the troops. :)
Thanks for giving our Jericho protest some publicity. We really appreciate it. We are trying very hard to reach all the fans out there that do not know about the cancelation. It seems that our protest has made some waves with CBS. We have been hearing news from several sources that CBS has now hired a PR firm to deal with the protest. We have not yet been able to verify it, but we are proceeding as it is true. And that has just caused the fans to get even more determined to save the show. It has given us a second wind. It is showing us that our efforts have made an effect. It has made us now triple our actions. This is far beyond saving a show. It is a protest against a network that is refusing to listen to its viewers. We want a say in what is aired. We want to help determine what is put on the networks. After all…. a network survives because of the fans' viewership and because of the fans' support. Yet so far most networks have refused to listen or even take notice of their viewers. We are also protesting because we are tired of the way the "viewers" are represented. The rating system is so very out of date. It doesn't count the people who use things like TIVO or a dvr. It doesn't count the people who watched the show on CBS' online network. It doesn't count the people who used I tunes or the xbox 360 to download and watch the show. Yet networks are still using this out of date raiting system and basing decisions on that. That has got to change. Most of us are tired of the reality tv. Most of us are tired of the mindless trash that keeps getting put on. We want entertainment. We want action. We want Romance. We want Comedy. We want family values and morals. We want drama. And Jericho had it all. That is why we fight. :D And we will continue. We hope other networks are paying attention. Today it is CBS. It could very well be them being protested next. Listen to your viewers. Get them involved with the decisions. Let us have a voice in what is aired. The networks will get more support, will have more viewers, the shows won't flop, money won't be wasted, and we the fans will get entertained. It is better for everyone that way. I urge all TV viewers who are tired of the endless reality and mindless programs to please email cbs and tell them enough is enough! Thanks again for recognizing the Jericho protests! .
Hello, regarding your Jericho story. This is really a wonderful show about people coming together in society against all odds, something that we need right now. The acting is excellent and week to week I couldn't wait to see what happens next with these people who became a part of my household (along with all the folks on LOST and HEROES of course)and not only did CBS cancel this great show but they ended it on a cliffhanger to leave millions of viewers shocked and angry. The fact that CBS is cancelling this for yet ANOTHER reality show about little kids all alone in the desert (shame shame parents) well, CBS is NUTS! It's time that we stand up for what we believe in and in my opinion the fact that thousands of people are coming together and campaigning against this very stupid decision that CBS has made is amazing and gives me new hope in our society. NUTS to CBS!
Thanks for covering the Save Jericho movement. I think novels set in Jericho would also be good. Of course with a second season renewal. :)
I hated when they cancelled The Agency a few years back. I don't really know what we could have sent to CBS - missiles are expensive. Taking the lead from Trev who donated on behalf of Invasion, I'm donating nuts on behalf of The Agency! Good luck guys!
Hey Will, great blog. as far as the Jericho Campaign, I didn't know that Jericho was canceled. Didn't Roswell fans send Tabasco sauce to get their show renewed? Anyway , I have to hand it to these fans they are really making a splash, I just googled it and wow.
Hey thanks for givng the Save Jericho Campaign some exposure! We, the fans are very grateful. We loved the show and we have taken a stand against CBS telling us what we like and what we don't like! The 2 day tally from this weekend is at 3 more TONS of NUTS for a grand total of over 12 TONS! For those of you who have never seen Jericho, you are cordially invited to view all 22 episodes, online for FREE at www.cbs.com/primetime/jericho. Please note there is also a web series called COUNTDOWN, which was created to be viewed between episodes. While you're there please visit the Jerichowiki and the Jericho Message boards! If you would like to help in the "nut throwing" please visit www.nutsonline.com. If you want to know what you can do to help us please visit www.jerichorallypoint.com and www.jericholives.com or simply yahoo/google for over 2 million places to go for information! We will NOT stop fighting; we will NOT go away! Save Jericho! Again, thanks so much for the exposure!
I am a 65 yr old grandma who enjoyed Jericho and was just sick when it was canceled. This country could use some shows about survival, as I do believe, sooner or later, we will be faced with an event that will alter all of our lives. I'm sick of this trend toward reality shows and the way networks take the viewers for granted. Personally, I'm finished with CBS! In fact, I will be watching alot more non-network channels in the future and I am sure I won't be alone in tuning out the networks. Recently I read that TV viewership was down. Gee whiz, it doesn't take a genius to figure out why. Makes me wonder about the IQ of these TV execs. The rating system they use is obviously outdated.
Note that the dynamic building uses wind turbines between the floors to generate power for itself as well as other nearby buildings. So, it is intended to be more of a "green" concept than just a cool revolving floor thing.
After a slow start, “Jericho” was building a good deal of momentum and had become a truly enjoyable program. It was with a good deal of surprise that I heard it was cancelled as it had become a “must watch” program for myself and many others in the Baltimore, Md. viewing area. In addition to the MILLIONS of regular TV viewers watching each week on normal TV, there are quite a few people who had started watching the show mid-season and were “catching up” on earlier episodes either online or via cable on-demand services… or simply awaiting the summer re-runs to catch those earlier episodes. Now CBS simply says "Sorry!.. CANCELLED!" and plan to replace it with another mindless reality show. BLECCCH!! "Jericho" dealt with some interesting issues about about how the survivors of a nuclear attack on the U.S. cope with a new reality... banding together and working together ...or descending to baser instincts. This story had some great areas to explore and was a program CBS could have been very proud of long after its initial broadcast. This program certainly had become very popular in this area and makes me wonder if our Nielsen ratings system is somewhat obsolete nowadays... Life will go on without this program, but do we really need more "reality" programming and crime dramas???! Hopefully the folks at CBS will re-consider continuing this program for a second season… and create a win-win-win result for CBS, its sponsors, and all of the cast, crew and MILLIONS of viewers.
Jericho was a fantastic show, and a breath of fresh air in a by-and-large otherwise vast wasteland of drivel that contributes to the dumbing down of America. Quite clearly its premature cancellation has a large cross section of America up in arms. We are going to continue to fight the good fight until we meet with success. The Save Jericho Monster is growing...and it's hungry! NUTS!
Trev and Arizona Bob--Thanks for your help!
SAVE JERICHO! This was a show that was canceled...and shouldn't have been.
Jericho was cancelled? I did not know this. I loved the show!
I do believe that it speaks volumes that fans of a television show were able to partner with suppliers to protest the cancellation of their show. Wouldn't this be the exact kind of viewer that a network should value? They obviously support companies that support them. I was interested in all of this and googled Save Jericho- and there are more than a few nut companies that are helping to supply the cause. Wow. Consumers are showing that they can create supply and demand? Way to go, Jericho fans!
CBS in NY will be receiving 5 tons of nuts today around 10:00EST. Nuts to CBS! Save Jericho!
Look, people. It's simple. Not enough people watch Jericho. You may think it's the best thing since sliced bread. All your friends may watch, and that skews your impression of how popular it is. But, at the end of the day, networks are for-profit capitalist animals, and if enough people watch, it will stay on. It's really that simple.
Thanks for the coverage of the fight to save Jericho. It is my favorite new show and couldn't believe CBS's decision to cancel it. It suffered from a long hiatus and going up against American Idol, but still held a respectful size audience despite all that. Save Jericho. Sign the online petition. And Email CBS like crazy !!
Regarding Gore and the Slate article: I find it interesting and ironic that an organization (Slate) that spends so much time pointing to the irrelevance of print media uses print media to defend everybody else from Gore's accusation of Britney obcesion. By Slate's (and by extention, Will's) own arguments of the past, it's not what print media does that matters. Nobody in this tech-obcessed age pays any attention to that.
Will, I love your site and have commented many times, but never on the first link you clicked. This is another of those times! Thanks for the links to the Segway/Stroller piece and the bicycle lift. While they both made me laugh, it got the wheels grinding as well. I can't imagine trying to push a stroller while trying to maneuver a Segway. All I could think of was the woman falling over and pulling the stroller down with her, or worse, falling on the kid. The bike lift seemed reasonable. I especially liked the person taking a ride sans bike, but was disappointed in the mother riding the lift with the stroller. I admit my brain doesn't function the same since becoming a mother, but come on, that's a recipe for disaster!
The creators of Big Brother not telling someone that their dad has died is dispicable. I can't forsee what I would do if I came back from a reality TV show and my dad was not only dead but already buried. Where's the heart? Terrorists have nothing on these people.
Jericho was horrible. It was a big mess. It was gloomy and the main cast members all had nothing but bad things happen to them. I hated it and will never watch it regardless of the inane peanut campaign.
I too watched Jericho and was not happy when I got the news that it was cancelled. Last year i invested my time in Invasion and Surface, both which got cancelled. This year I invested in 6 new shows, Studio 60, Jericho, Brothers and Sisters, Standoff, Daybreak, and The Nine. The only one left standing is Brothers and Sisters. Its been a disappointing season for me. I'm changing my tactic next season and will opt for cable original programing.
Hi, Will. Long time reader, first time commenter. The reCAPTCHA effort sounds like a decent enough idea in theory, but eventually it's going to require somebody to re-check all the submissions for accuracy (and in case somebody just decides to enter wrong information for the fun of it). On the other hand, there's a group that's already been doing this, for quite some time now. Project Gutenberg has a program called Distributed Proofreaders: http://www.pgdp.net And it has a series of checks and balances in place, along with some pretty decent training for anyone who wants to volunteer to proofread their massive collection of public-domain texts. I've personally gotten involved with this, and while I can say that I had fun doing it, it does require a certain attention to detail that I doubt this reCAPTCHA program will attract in the average web surfer. Plus, why re-invent the wheel?
I was amazed that Jericho wasn't a bigger hit. I agree with you that books have gone there before, and maybe better, but for TV it was something unusually interesting. I hope the campaign to bring it back succeeds. I don't watch reality shows but had no idea they could be so evil as to not inform a contestant of the death of a parent. I can't imagine people making a decision like that. On a lighter note, thanks for the fun links to the Segway and the sign.
I can really imagine president Washington saying "I'm xossing the Dellawarz to kill UR Doodz" ....no one else in my office thinks its funny....I laughed for like ten minutes. lolzorz!!1!
