ABOUT CLICKED

The modern news consumer ignores Weblogs and online citizen journalism at his own peril. But not everyone has the time to keep track of what's going on the Web. With this blog we hope to track the highlights of what's being discussed online so when news breaks from the Web, we're ready.

Will Femia is a Weblog enthusiast who, through good fortune and dumb luck, was introduced to the form as his position as chat producer for MSNBC.com careered into obsolescence. On any given day, Will can be found having already spent an unhealthy amount of time squinting at a computer screen.

That 'baby on ecstasy' video

Posted: Wednesday, July 11, 2007 3:43 PM by Will Femia

In a similar vein to our following of the cop/skater story that sprang from a YouTube video posting, there's another story following the same path.  In this case a little girl in a crowded mini-van rolls her head eyes in her eyes head while family members moosh her cheeks and otherwise play with her face.  At one point someone jokes that she shouldn't have taken X, which some interpret to mean that the baby has been drugged and is rolling her eyes in a chemical haze.

The YouTube video, as well as the sister's MySpace page have been wiped from the Web but for those of us who prefer primary sources, there's a copy of the video here at Deleted You Tube (NOTE: The site has an ad with a be-thonged butt on it.  ANOTHER NOTE:  It's been pointed out that there are porn ads on it as well. I only see text ads on the side, so there must be some kind of ad rotation with a few clunkers.).

As fascinating as it is to see how the Web community took it upon themselves to contact authorities on the matter, I'm not sure I'm on board with this charge. It looks like kids playing to me - even if she is being a little rough with the cheek pinching.

The cable folks are running the story on the air today including some footage of the family being chased from a parking lot by the media.  I have a feeling this won't end up being one of the Web's prouder moments.

Even if it's proven that the baby didn't take any type of drug, the thing that also bothered me the most in the video was the fact that it looked like this baby was on the car floor, behind the driver's seat and not in a car seat.  If those folks had crashed....
You should warn a bit more about the "Deleted YouTube" site.  Yeah, there's a be-thonged butt at the top, but that's nothing compared to what's on either side...graphic porn ads w/ motion even.
That's gotta be "rolls her eyes in her head," in the second sentence. And if you're gonna roll your eyes, your head is the best place to do it in.

Or should I watch the video before making pedantic pronouncements?
Neither the little girl nor an infant in the car were in carseats. I'm glad that there were people who cared enough to let the authorities know if for no other reason than the adults might think next time and strap the children in safely.
Apparently, they are saying that no drugs were found in the little girl's system. But Extacy only stays in your system for a few days (3 days max I've heard) - the video was made at least 3 weeks ago. So...they aren't going to find drugs in her system probably. How will they prove it? I'm so scared that child will be returned to that irresponsible woman (and her hoodlum friends)
Even if the girl was just "playing" with the child, those babies should've been in carseats and the mother shouldn't have been doing that to the childs face...trashy people like those shouldn't be allowed to have children.
What kind of moron parent thinks it's hilarious to tease your child about taking Ecstasy?  Whether it was just a joke or not, obviously the mother is immature, and I wouldn't be surprised if there were other forms of neglect going on, in addition to the lack of safety restraints in the car.  I'm glad authorities are checking the family out and don't think there's anything about which "the Web" should feel ashamed.  I can't imagine why this *wouldn't* be one of "the Web's prouder moments," if it ensures that the children involved are being cared for properly.
regardless of whether or not that baby had drugs in her system its digusting to see a child being treated that way!the lack of safety and all those other teens laughing at her if she was on drugs she would be in distress and THAT id not something that is neither funny or something to be making jokes of if the child protection services there have any brains at all they would be removing that child from whomever her parents are child abuse should have more of a penalty maybe the laws should be whomever can drive a car or fish and hunt without a license but to be a parent you should have to hold a license watching that was sickening!
Ok folks, I can't believe the only thing most of you are worried about is the fact that the children werent in carseats!! So its ok to have giving the child ecstasy as long as she is properly restrained?! The girl, and the people in the car, were CLEARLY on X and I think its sick!! Nothing about the video looks "fake" to me, and of course they are saying it was a joke! THEY GOT CAUGHT! The girl should be taken away from that environment immediatley and the people who gave her the drug should be punished severly!
i dont think the little one was on exstacy it was clear that no one else was on it so why would she who would be that sick and if she was on exstacy they would of had to take her tothe hospital cause she would of oded he body couldnt of took that
That baby was on ecstacy, her eyes were so messed up!  And it looks like the other girls were too.  That is the sickest thing I have ever watched, those girls are lucky that little girl was not seriously hurt or even worse!  They should all rot in jail!!!
I agree with you.
It's stupid how people could take kidding round so seriously.
There's no doubt in my mind the older two girls were rolling, but the little girl? I'm not sure.....Kids mimic their significant others.....maybe she really was just playing around. still, her caregivers shouldn't be using drugs around children either way.

How do you know the person pinching her cheeks was the mother? How do you guys even know if the mother was present?
well if she wasnt on ecstacy then she was on something else because the that girl was playing with her face pretty rough and that little girl wasnt crying! When your on drugs sometimes you cant feel pain! for ex. when you smoke mariguana if you fall or hit yourself you dont feel it and this is what is happening to this little girl and thats not funny. this should be taken siriously and not as something to ignore. IF THERES SOMEONE WHO THINKS THAT IT LOOKS FAKE THEN YOU SHOULD RESEARCH MORE ABOUT DRUGS. AND NOT JUST JUMP INTO YOUR CONCLUSION!!!!!
