ABOUT CLICKED

The modern news consumer ignores Weblogs and online citizen journalism at his own peril. But not everyone has the time to keep track of what's going on the Web. With this blog we hope to track the highlights of what's being discussed online so when news breaks from the Web, we're ready.

Will Femia is a Weblog enthusiast who, through good fortune and dumb luck, was introduced to the form as his position as chat producer for MSNBC.com careered into obsolescence. On any given day, Will can be found having already spent an unhealthy amount of time squinting at a computer screen.

Porn and sex and boobs

Never let it be said that I don't come out of a lull without a good headline.

I'm not sure how old this is, maybe a few months, but it's new to me since I don't do a lot of fashion rating online.  StyleMob is like the "Hot Or Not" sites but you're rating the subject's outfit.

Speaking of my poor attention to fashion, I was looking at the picture of this clever origami ad when I saw the next one on the blog was for breast implants. Again, I don't often look at fashion magazines so maybe I'm out of the loop on this, but the only cosmetic ads I usually see are either for teeth or for liposuction.  Apparently in Colombia they're little more um... up front about breast implants.

Speaking of breast implants (and bear with me, there's a point to this), totally NSFW: Spot the fake breasts, I got 16 out of 20 which is not as good as I'd prefer but still better than 99% according to the closing screen.  The problem is that they're not presented very scientifically.  They all look like cropped porn photos.

Speaking of fake breasts and losing touch with reality, and really the point of my assembling this thread of links, could it be that watching porn actually makes men less interested in real sex with real women? The argument in this article is that contrary to concerns that porn would turn men into sex maniacs, the gap between the expectations set by stylized porn sex and the practical realities of actual sex with actual women is such that actual women are losing ground in their ability to draw the attention of men.  There's an interesting point about how a regular woman merely naked used to be a big deal and now faces all kinds of ridiculous porny expectations to achieve the same big deal.  Then it veers off to celebrate orthodox religious practices of covering women to the eyes of everyone but their husbands and... well... you can read it, it's only a couple pages, see how much you agree with.

Speaking of people having (or not having) sex, "students with IQs above 100 and below 70 were significantly less likely to have had intercourse than those in between." The piece goes on to point out that students at top colleges don't have as much sex and even students in the "smarter" majors don't have as much sex -or, as the piece puts it, "it would strongly appear that higher complexity majors contain more virgins than majors with lower cognitive demand." If you find the stats depressing, stop reading before you get to the analysis at the end.  There is no good news for nerds there except maybe for a paragraph about athleticism.

Ok, that's enough of that.  Moving on...

Charley the cat has a condition that makes him seem a little broken, but don't hold that against him.

I do not understand the insistence on electronic voting given its demonstrated vulnerability. And I don't understand why six months is not enough time to implement a new system in California, again given the demonstrated vulnerability.

And speaking of having enough time to tinker with the system in California, "Two weeks ago, one of the most important Republican lawyers in Sacramento quietly filed a ballot initiative that would end the practice of granting all fifty-five of California’s electoral votes to the statewide winner."

Speaking of rigging votes, there is a campaign afoot to send the Spice Girls to Baghdad. You have to register and I can't see them doing it even if there were enough votes, but it's a funny idea.

"Once enough people have signed up in a given city we'll announce an official "picnicmob" day!" First you have to take a personality quiz so when you go to the picnic they can put you next to people who are similar to you.

You can get arrested for that - Apparently there's a book of ridiculous laws that are still on the books and this guy is blogging as he breaks as many of them as he can.

"The Haier WasH2O washing machine doesn’t use any detergents." It breaks the water molecules and washes with ions (?).

Activist "gotcha" videos are inherently unfair, but since readers of Clicked are intelligent enough to see past that we can look at the underlying question as an interesting exercise.  This guy is asking anti-abortion protestors how women who have illegal (if the protestors have their way) abortions should be punished. The people in the video seem to default to the kind of Christianity I was taught growing up that emphasizes forgiveness over the kind of punitive justice our legal system deals in. I imagine they'd be less ambiguous about the doctors who do the procedures, however.

Speaking of odd legal debates, Homicide charges in helicopter crash a tough call - Remember last week those two news helicopters that crashed into each other while covering a police chase?  When I heard they wanted to charge the guy being chased for the deaths of the people in the helicopters I thought it was the most ridiculous thing I'd ever heard.  Reading this piece (which also includes a link to the video that was being shot when one of the helicopters crashed), I'm still not convinced the guy should receive extra charges, but at least I can see how they're trying to establish a sort of "none of this would have happened if..." precedent.

Why are we so scared of offending Muslims? This from the guy who wrote, "God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything," so offending religious people is obviously not a problem for him.

"Photographs of signs that transcend their objectivity to reveal our humanity."

How to predict the weather without a forecast.

You may have seen the AP piece on MyDeathSpace, which is not a new site by any means, but I don't recall there being a map mash-up last time I was there. I see they've got the MySpace page of the girl who is being questioned in the castration death of her father. I don't know if that's getting any national play but it's making local headlines.

Ralph's Recommendations:

Speed Stacker: A Game of Timing and Focus
How high can you raise your stack of building blocks?

This one's really simple. Just stop each new row of building blocks directly on top of the previous row to build your stack. But if your timing is off, you'll start the next row with fewer blocks. Oh, and the rows start moving faster as your stack gets higher.

(If you're like me, you'll end the game thinking "Crap! I know I could've done better than that!" And then you'll start a new round.)

Good luck.
-Ralph

Will adds: I did exactly what Ralph did because it seems like this should be an easier game than it is. It's pretty novel actually.  I don't think I've played a one-button game like this before.

First off, I'm surprised that Dworkin and Wolfe are still alive, but then I don't really run in those circles.

Then I was surprised to find that I actually agree with them. While not all men who view porn may be de-sensitized to real naked women, it does appear that for some men at least, porn can be addictive. I would like to see some unbiased research in that area.

Regardless, I don't think the 'porn genie' will ever get put back into the bottle.

What was also surprising was to see Wolfe, an uber-feminist, embrace cultural/religious practices elsewhere that would have her head exploding if anyone suggested that they be done here in the US. Can you imagine her reaction if Jerry Falwell had suggested that women voluntarily cover up so that only their husband would get to see their hair?
In re: Helicopter crash resulting in homicide charges-
Now, let us assume that a fleeing suspect is responsible for an aircraft collision incidental to that suspect's resistence to arrest. Should be next assume that if an editor suffers a fatal coronary attack while working on an account of the story, the suspect is also to held accountable for that? How about if a truck driver, carrying a load of newpapers for sale and bearing a headline related to the criminal activity, hits a pedestrian? What if a common citizen driver hits a pedestrian while listening to the news account on the car radio? For a felony to occur there must be felonious intent. Revenge is not the same thing as justice; justice is the restoration of social order. This accident did not occur because of a violation of social order; it occurred because of poor piloting skills and the nature of gravity, as far as we can tell.
FYI:  Murder/manslaughter charges are NOT being filed against the fleeing suspect.
Re: men less interested in real sex with real women?
Oh, come on...

Nice piece, but, frankly, this is really stretching things... Here we are, in the U.S.A. of the 21st Century, possibly the most prude society in the Western world, lamenting that kids get such a high from porn that they can't get interested in real females any more... Uhm...Does not sound right to me. What there seems to be is a major conflict between a leftover sexual liberation from the 60s, and 70s, against a ridiculous backlash of religious prudery... So, male kids are concentrating on porn rather than their female peers, uh? Maybe, they have been set back, mentally, and emotionally, by social taboos, rather than by porn itself (like, porn is OK - nobody will know - while doing it is not... - oh, boy...)
Re; Why are we so scared of offending Muslims? This from the guy who wrote, "God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything," so offending religious people is obviously not a problem for him.

Uhm.. So, what's your point? That, indeed, it is good to tiptoe around Muslim fanatics' preposterous claims, so as not to "offend" them? I hope not, but, if it was...

...Great! It used to be that America, as opposed to many European nations, specifically lacked laws condemning free speech "offensive" of religions. That was not a chance event - it is the First Amendment... But, apparently, we are now "beyond" that... :( Oh me, oh my... And, yes, the guy has no qualms about "offending" religious hacks, but, wait a minute, wasn't this country founded on free speech and no fear of religious persecution in the first place?
"Sixteen states have felony pursuit laws on the books to protect people from dangerous high speed chases, and it's time that New York became the seventeenth," Sen.James Alesi said, Senate sponsor of the bill.

Now, certainly there is a difference between police chasing a suspect and Action News teams doing so but the existence of "felonius intent" does not seem to be  the necessary criteria.  Felonius consequence, perhaps?

Ps.  20/20.
blogging..... it's like going to a party and talking to as many people as you can hoping someone will say something interesting.. right.......
Sweet!  So, does this mean that if I spill hot coffee on myself while I watch another low speed chase on tv, that I can sue the driver since "it never would have happened if..."
"Speaking of fake breasts and losing touch with reality, and really the point of my assembling this thread of links, could it be that watching porn actually makes men less interested in real sex with real women?"

I hope I live to the day that we have lifelike woman androids to do our every bidding.  No arguments, no muss, no fuss, turn 'em off when you want.
RE:  Apparently in Colombia they're little more um... up front about breast implants.

Colombia is a country of male domination so the women there are pressured to conform to ideal body images and the result is acceptance of all types of plastic surgery, despite whatever costs and risks it may have.
So, smart people have less sex then average people? And porn makes guys less interested in real women? So smart guys, who can't get any because they are smart, turn to porn and then are no longer interested in real women? Is that why such a large percentage of the population seems to be barely competent enough to walk and chew gum at the same time?

Wow, I don't think I've ever been so depressed about having an above average IQ in my entire life. Thanks Will!
No, we don't become "desensitized" to real, live women, we just get tired of all the emotional baggage and Oprah/Dr. Phil/Montel/Cosmo-induced bull****.
Porn allows one Neutrality in the "War of the Sexes".
Re porn. Yes, men can get addicted to porn and lose interest in real women. This happened to my husband after an accident that left him temporarily unable to perform for a few months. After his physical recovery he had no interest in the real thing but continued to spend every waking moment looking at porn on the computer. Only after I started filing for divorce and he had to come clean--only after hearing himself say that the only times he wasn't looking at porn was when he was asleep or at work did he realize he had a problem. Now he avoids porn and we're back to having a happy life together. And incidentally he's thanked me several times for making him take a close look at his own behavior. I suppose it's easier to see it in other people than in one's self.
Speaking of voting records, the majority of voting records from the Ohio 2004 presidential election were destroyed, illegally.  These records would have been crucial evidence in seeing if the election was in fact 'stolen'.  http://www.alternet.org/story/58328/
Nope, no conspiracy here, move along...
Anecdotal evidence taking by talking to reliable college student anecdote users has proven that people who use anecdotal evidence as evidence of anecdotes are more likely to be bored by anecdotes than people who rely on hard facts and statistics when sharing their anecdotes about people proving what they believe through anecdotal evidence.
As a wife of a porn addict, let me tell you porn can and does destroy marriages.  I just pray to God that he will get ahold of him.  Thats all I can do.
I can't tell you how relieved I am that whale hunting is illegal in Utah.  Now if we can just pass similar laws in Kansas, Nevada, Colorado and Arizona, this country will finally be back on the right track.  Hey, John McCain, there's a campaign platform for ya...
I asked my bf his view about the "porn desensitizes men to real sex" article, and this was his insightful response: "I agree porn doesn't turn men into sex crazed zombies. However, I think the article exaggerates its effect on mens' libidos towards real women. Porn might have a desensitizing affect, making sex and acts associated with sex more commonplace and therefore less scintillating. I still believe a man would 99% of the time prefer the real thing to pictures or movies. I think the article accurately expresses fears many women do have towards porn, but that doesn't mean there is any basis for alarm.  After all, pictures only act on one of the senses; it will only be time to worry if a device could be made to act on them all. Even then, the human species on the whole tends to prefer the idea of the real vs. synthetic. Take the Matrix for example, even though it's just a movie, I believe it demonstrates our unwillingness to live in and with synthetic conditions."

Certainly makes me feel better.
In regards to the article on sex and intellegence, I am amused by the unsupported assertion that an arts major is less cognatively challenging than a science major. Might I presume that the author was a science major? I've studied both, and found that a cross-discipline approach not only massaged both hemispheres of my brain, but increased my dating success by a significant margin. I'll submit the graphs once my grant application is approved.
That's crap, does watching too many Outback steak commercials make you not want the real thing? It's simple will power, just like gambling or drinking. mind over matter or maybe you should try viewing it together.
20 for 20 on the boob test!
I do believe that perhaps porn does desensitize some men, but my boyfriend/fiance and I both love porn, and it has improved our sex life immensely.  We love to watch it together and alone.  Maybe some of the women should try opening their minds and sharing this interest with their husbands/boyfriends.
