ABOUT CLICKED

The modern news consumer ignores Weblogs and online citizen journalism at his own peril. But not everyone has the time to keep track of what's going on the Web. With this blog we hope to track the highlights of what's being discussed online so when news breaks from the Web, we're ready.

Will Femia is a Weblog enthusiast who, through good fortune and dumb luck, was introduced to the form as his position as chat producer for MSNBC.com careered into obsolescence. On any given day, Will can be found having already spent an unhealthy amount of time squinting at a computer screen.

That old Karl Rove clip

Posted: Monday, August 20, 2007 1:58 PM by Will Femia

The Sunday talk shows ran clips of Karl Rove as a college student in 1972. It was part of a CBS newscast -a Dan Rather segment, ironically enough.  The Rove bit is at the 4 minute mark, but the who thing is a pretty interesting look at the foundations of modern campaigning.

"That is some high tech computin' you got there, Lou."

The clip is amazing. It does indeed teach about how far campaigns have come in the last 35 years. The national re-election headquarters for a major party in 1972 consisted of two offices and a common area smaller than what my insurance agent has today!

I can not believe that anyone thought Rove was going to reach young people. Even for the times, he looked like a nerd.

On a more serious note, I wonder how Rather sounded to the average viewer when he was talking about your name being on a list because you bought a washcloth. Did they see it as some kind of Big-Brother-Is-Watching-You loss of privacy?

Should they have?
Talk about a blast from the past.  Jeb McGruder for one.  Rove was already a planner even then wasn't he.
Interesting how unbiased the news reporting seems.
Karl, Karl, the darkside it is very strong. Fight it you must.
I find it amazing how news managment has evolved.  That Odell Jr. guy acted like he hadn't even rehearsed or his answeres pre-planned.  Didn't they realize he was going to be interviewed?  That pause and verbal stumbling would have been unthinkable today.
