ABOUT CLICKED

The modern news consumer ignores Weblogs and online citizen journalism at his own peril. But not everyone has the time to keep track of what's going on the Web. With this blog we hope to track the highlights of what's being discussed online so when news breaks from the Web, we're ready.

Will Femia is a Weblog enthusiast who, through good fortune and dumb luck, was introduced to the form as his position as chat producer for MSNBC.com careered into obsolescence. On any given day, Will can be found having already spent an unhealthy amount of time squinting at a computer screen.

Death trap mileage

Posted: Thursday, December 20, 2007 5:31 PM by Will Femia

No strong lead today but Hardball is half over so it's time to post what I've got.

In 1987 the Honda Civic got 57mpg. This article explains why that's no longer the case.  The short answer is that weight is the enemy of fuel efficiency so if you want to ride in a cramped death trap then you can have great mileage. If you want leg room, trunk room and crash safety (not to mention extra bells and whistles) then you have to pay to haul them around.

Speaking of mileage, I don't understand this one at all. Some states want to set tailpipe standards higher than what the federal government is setting. The EPA says no. The only explanation appears to be that the EPA thinks its standards are good enough. The only thing I can figure is that the EPA has an interest in keeping all the states at the same standard for some reason.

Why Ron Paul fans like him so much. The best part starts at 3:30 when he explains to the news anchor why the question he's being asked is a ridiculous straw man.

The approaching primary elections are bringing a new wave of headlines to remind us of how messed up our election system still is:

You may be sick of this story by now, but CNet interviewed Lane Hartwell, the photographer from the viral video story.

In the new Duke Nukem trailer he lifts weights while smoking a cigar.

Do any of you find diamond ads to be sexist? I'm usually pretty sensitive about that sort of thing but I confess diamond sales never struck me as any more sexist (or generally stupid) as any other ad. The parody ads on this are really funny.

Amazing gallery of eyes - NOTE: If you're like me and you see long links like this and try to pick apart the URL to find the home page or other galleries, you will likely find some nudes, as I did. The page to which I've linked is totally safe, however. But don't let that scare you away from eventually finding time to explore Art Department which is rich with great images.

I've linked to one of these Zero Punctuation video game reviews before but they're really fun. Don't worry if you don't know video games, you'll still enjoy it. NOTE: Colorful language. But he talks so fast anyone who isn't trying to hear what your machine is playing probably won't notice. That can't be said for all of the reviews on the list, however so headphones may be the prudent choice.

The 10 Best Rollercoasters on Earth - The good thing about this report is that each one has a first person YouTube video of a complete circuit on the ride.

Not new but still cool, recipes for chain restaurant food. (No wonder I like that Chevy's salsa, it's full of salt and "liquid smoke."

Speaking of recipes, this was a good one in the Times yesterday: 101 Simple Appetizers in 20 Minutes or Less

Along with his master list of year-end lists, Rex also publishes an annual list of Best Blogs That You (Maybe) Aren't Reading - We've seen a few of them here at Clicked. I didn't realize Reverse Cowgirl had restarted. A million years ago I was writing about porn blogs and my editor at the time ruled against linking to Reverse Cowgirl given the nature of the content. The blogger, Susannah Breslin, wrote a rant about corporate censorship and the ridiculousness of mentioning her blog but not linking to it and she included a little photoshop rendering of a corporate guy in a business suit with an msnbc.com logo for a face spanking a girl in a school girl skirt with a paddle. Heh.

This guy has made a recreation of posting Craigslist singles ads. That sounds mean but when you read the ads he posts you realize it's almost more like social commentary than prank. And then when you enjoy the responses he shares you won't really care one way or other.

Have you seen that Idiocracy movie on HBO yet? That's what I'm imagining.

did you mean to include a link in the first sentence of the art-dept post?
Could the reason be that the tailpipe emmissions standard would be a way of protecting people driving from one state to another?   Could the one state, with higher standards, fine a person from a lower standard state traveling through their state?  Being on an island makes me notice this possibility. I miss being able to drive to see my family.  I'm now stuck waiting for the airlines to lower the fares.
Damn. Thanks Chris. It's in there now.
Firstly, I now love Zero Punctuation. Maybe because I have a thing for 'brit' comedy, but mostly because it's just funny.

Secondly, i've found myself referencing Idiocracy a lot, however i've only met ONE other person who has seen it. I, personally, find this strange, as it does seem to be the way society is going. Consider the opening of the movie, and look at society now.

Maybe it wasn't well received because it's too close to the truth?

Thanks for the laughs! Have a Merry Christmas! (Or, alternatively, enjoy the holiday you happen to celebrate!)
That was a really interesting view of the diamond company ads.  I'm usually really sensitive to sexism myself, being a woman and all, and I have never once thought of it that way.

The site you linked to brought up a point that to me is the only way you could consider it sexist....to men.  They said that ad with the guy doing his girlfriends toes..and they said, "because your not that guy"...go to blah blah diamond company.

I always LOVED that commercial...but it is true.  Why can't guys be that guy?  Some guys are that guy, and if they aren't the girls they have are with them for other reasons entirely.  So, that ad could be slightly sexist.

I don't see them as sexist to women though.  Shoot...if it is, then I'll be a victim any day.  Because it isn't about what the guy gets in return for the diamonds to me...it is about him expressing his love in a VERY tangible way.
RE the EPA ruling - if individual states adpt toughter emissions laws, then automobile manufacturers have to make special models for those states; i.e. a new car legal to be sold in Texas can't be sold in California.  Oops, that's what we have already - manufacturers have to charge more for their cars to be compliant in all 50 states because of a few states' requiements.
Thanks for the link to Ron Paul.  It gives a hint as to why we don't see more media coverage of him--what reporter wants to end up looking foolish?  In spite of the lack of coverage, I hope people will look into his message for this country, because it's his defense of the Constitution, not his bandying with reporters, that his supporters love.
OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG!  That's MY car!  I paid $8000 for a 1987 CRX HF.  Silver - just like the picture.  It got, at worst, 53 MPG and, at best, 58!  Yeah, the straight line acceleration wouldn't pull the wings off a gnat - and a kid on a Schwinn made for serious competition at a red light - but I could drive all week (a 30 mile, one-way commute) on 8 gallons of gas and still have gas left over to get back to the filling station on Monday morning!  Without power steering, which you didn't need anyway, you could really feel the road and stability was never, ever a problem.  Man - what a dunce I was to ever get rid of it!
The recipes for chain restaurant food link links to some BS site. I think there might be a prob.
The chain food recipes link just goes to a page full of ads for me. Do I need to click something else?
My wife and I have had an '83 Civic hatchback and an '85 Civic wagon.  Nice cars, and I miss them, but the only way they got close to even 40 mpg was the way my old slant-six Valiant got close to the 18 mpg rating it was rated for after the Mobilgas Economy Run (remember those?). Going downhill, with the windows closed, the clutch depressed, and tire pressure up around 35 psi.
I wonder if Ron Paul's supporters really have any idea what he really stands for.  it's scary.
BDL and Anon, that link was high on Digg this morning so from your description I thought it had been hacked or turned into a money maker. Looking at it though, it appears that the problem is that they forgot to pay the bill for their URL. I'm going to keep the link up on the chance that they settle up and the page comes back.
I found this while trying to research if Jonathan Goodwin was legit(look back to Oct.31st post)...

...if this is how you have to drive to get good gas mileage, I'd rather walk ;)

If you want to know why the EPA is blocking CA (and therefore all the other states that want to follow), it is because the Bush Administration has been trying to protect car companies. They claim that they have this new standard coming out, and how great it will be, but no one has seen it, so it is unlikely to be real. But, I promise you that the car companies do not like emission standards with teeth in them, especially with a strong timetable. So, they prefer the "compromise" ones from the Feds.
As to the worry about crossing State lines, that has never been the case. CA has usually had stricter emission standards than the Fed government, but that only applies to new cars and only to residents, not to someone coming into the State.
Re Nikki:  " They said that ad with the guy doing his girlfriends toes..and they said, "because your not that guy"...go to blah blah diamond company.

I always LOVED that commercial...but it is true.  Why can't guys be that guy?"

For the same reason girls can't be that girl dancing around the pole at the Pink Pony.  Oops, I'm sorry, I meant "gals"...
I can't figure out the trend with the diamond ads.  They've been around (and irritating) since I can recall and finally this year everybody realized what a stupid assumption it is that all women want is pretty, shiny, expensive things.
I had to laugh at the "you're not that guy" ad though, because my husband IS that guy.  He paints my nails and watches foreign movies with me.  I watch sports and work on the car with him.  It keeps things interesting.  Whatta concept.
