ABOUT CLICKED

The modern news consumer ignores Weblogs and online citizen journalism at his own peril. But not everyone has the time to keep track of what's going on the Web. With this blog we hope to track the highlights of what's being discussed online so when news breaks from the Web, we're ready.

Will Femia is a Weblog enthusiast who, through good fortune and dumb luck, was introduced to the form as his position as chat producer for MSNBC.com careered into obsolescence. On any given day, Will can be found having already spent an unhealthy amount of time squinting at a computer screen.

That videotaped beating of the cheerleader

There isn't a whole lot of background material to be found on this story about the teen girls in Florida who confronted a former friend and beat her mercilessly. This in spite of the fact that the story's origins are in MySpace postings. Most of the girls involved have set their MySpace profiles to private, including what is likely that of the victim, Victoria Lindsay (who communicates through her profile's headline that she is "just fine" and "happy."

One MySpace page not set to private is that of Mercades Nichols in whose house the beating takes place and with whom Lindsay was staying, according to the police report. Nothing new has been added to the online account since the incident so it doesn't serve as much more than character color for the story. It's interesting to note that the Lindsay account has left an affectionate comment on the Nichols account as recently as March 4th.

It's Nichols' mother who is featured in the latter half of this video. Speaking of video, the clip in the Orlando Sentinel coverage has clearer audio. It's mostly screaming but you get a sense of what the beating is about.

The Ledger, whose coverage includes AP video of Lindsay's parents, has scans of the police affidavits which describe the attack in greater detail. (It says 17 pages but really it's just a few pages repeated.)

What a sad joke. Why do kids think that something like this is justifiable? Better lock 'em up and teach them a lesson. Free country = free speech. Grow up kids.
The affidavits are for several of the kids, not repeats. These types of videos may be prevalent on the internet, but how do these kids never get taught or never learn that these types of things are crimes. Although, they did make the "don't go to the cops" threat. Maybe straight stupidity accounts for the videotaping.
The video of the beating was shocking for its violence, but the video of the mother was equally shocking for its ignorance. Frankly, I think she (maybe all the parents?) deserves as much scorn as her reprehensible wannabe thug of a daughter.
Punks. All of 'em. Send 'em to Iraq where they can learn some REAL life lessons. The video is a disgusting display of what's wrong in our society. Incivility is part of our pop culture these days - just watch any reality show that seems to be so popular.
If these or other kids beat one of my kids up, the last thing they will see is a 45 cal bullet heading straight for betwwen their eys.
i can't believe this mother actually had the nerve to say the victim should take responsiblity.  what is she teaching her daughter?  is ok to to beat someone if they say something about you.  that's ridiculous.  she should teach her daughter to be above that.  mom sounds like a thug herself.  she should be charged with something.
When i saw this video on the news i use in shock and how can people do this to the cheerleader. If i was there i have called th police and i hope they get locked up and learn there lesson. VIOLENCE=NOTHING.Point they are going to JAIL.
I can not tell you how my heart went out to this poor girl. May God be with her! This Video has opened my eyes I have a 14 yr old and I don't know what I would do if somthing like this happend to her. Kids I don't care how old you are please be aware you never know who could turn on you!!!!Parents watch your kids Bad or Good Control your children... The girls that did this hope you pay for this...............
This is what insecurity, selfloathing and ignorant parents have offered to our society, what kind of excuse for a parent would respond in such a manner?
We have to try our hardest to develope well rounded women, Don't forget, these are the young adults who will one day care for OUR needs in our OLD AGE, God Help us if we can't adress these issues now
