ABOUT CLICKED

The modern news consumer ignores Weblogs and online citizen journalism at his own peril. But not everyone has the time to keep track of what's going on the Web. With this blog we hope to track the highlights of what's being discussed online so when news breaks from the Web, we're ready.

Will Femia is a Weblog enthusiast who, through good fortune and dumb luck, was introduced to the form as his position as chat producer for MSNBC.com careered into obsolescence. On any given day, Will can be found having already spent an unhealthy amount of time squinting at a computer screen.

Who needs terrorists?

I cannot even find the words to express how angry I am about this plane photo-op stunt. The fear in these people's voices and the sound of that plane. That is 35 seconds of time machine in that clip.Livid.

"a" presidential plane or "THE" presidential plane?
I am glad you are back. I have been checking off and on since the first. I had just about given up.
I cannot imagine how anyone thought this was a good idea. People should be held responsible....from whoever conceived of the idea to those who cleared it.
I completely agree with you on this, Will. Exactly what kind of reaction did the boneheads who decided to do this expect? They seriously didn't anticipate that people would panic?! Infuriating!
pre 9/11, photo flights were routine, everyday, and people were accustomed to them.
post 9/11, photo flights are mostly banned, and are unusual now.
Thanks for posting some new stuff!
I feel for the people who were frightened by that plane yesterday.  How stupid not to announce there was going to be a flyover!  ...couldn't photoshop have been used?
I'm sure there's someone with PhotoShop and Google Earth starting up a webpage somewhere.
I don't buy the panic.  I thought New Yorkers were supposed to be tough.

So, I call shenanigans on that video.  That "panic" looks staged to me.  They did everything short of yelling "Godzilla!"
where was the photographer standing to take the photo?  staten island? jersey? brooklyn?  a ferry?  what's the visual/vantage point of the photographer?
i think, it looks like they're in Liberty Park on the Jersey side behind that giant clock.
Jim, one of these days I'll upload my 9/11 photos for Clicked readers but let me assure you that the sound of people screaming and running being drowned out by the deafening mechanical whine of a plane flying way too low is so exactly what I saw and heard the WNBC clip could have been shot out my window that very morning. Re: the question of whether it was "the" presidential aircraft: the airplane that overflew Manhattan was an Air Force aircraft, one of (at least) two 747's with the primary mission of president transport.  Since the President wasn't aboard, it was NOT "Air Force One"-- but it WAS one of the two 747's that he usually travels in.

Here's how the callsigns work: any Air Force aircraft with the President aboard carries the callsign "Air Force One".  Doesn't matter whether it's the usual 747 or he's up for a ride in an F16, or maybe he's going into a smaller airport so he's on an Air Force operated Lear Jet-- whatever Air Force aircraft he's on becomes "Air Force One".  When he's not aboard, all aircraft uses their normal Air Force callsign.

Similarly, any Marine aircraft with the President aboard is "Marine One" (could be the usual helicopter, a Harrier jump jet, whatever).  Any Navy aircraft becomes "Navy One".  Army aircraft, "Army One".  And, if it's a privately owned aircraft (anything from a Gulfstream to a Piper Cub), that aircraft becomes "Executive One".

I think Mr. Hawk is onto something here.  I've made several trips to New York and there was always something suspicious about the place.  I remember encountering a man on a sidewalk who kept repeating the same phrase over and over, very similar to what one would expect from some sort of video game CGI stuck in a loop.  Then there were the occasional smells that defied description.  And prices so outrageous that no normal person would pay them so it must have been more CGI people in all of those stores and restaurants buying all that stuff.  Admit it Will, you really work out of Bismark, don't you?
