The motto was part of a volunteer toast which General Stark sent to his wartime comrades, in which he declined an invitation to head up a 32nd anniversary reunion of the 1777 Battle of Bennington in Vermont, because of poor health.
The toast said: "Live Free Or Die; Death Is Not The Worst of Evils." The following year, a similar invitation (also declined) said: "The toast, sir, which you sent us in 1809 will continue to vibrate with unceasing pleasure in our ears, "Live Free Or Die; Death Is Not The Worst Of Evils."

It was adopted as the New Hampshire state motto.

That "Hitler losing it" scene from "Downfall" has been used over and over again on YouTube for just about any conceivable topic people want to apply their own subtitles to. Many of them have actually been quite hilarious. This one...while I'm sure there are more than a few ultranationalist right-wingers who do see anything Clinton as the second coming of fascism (or communism, more likely), I think this particular case is probably more of an example of someone trying to keep the YouTube/"Downfall" bandwagon going by upping the shock value of the language & tying it into contemporary political events.

BTW, "Downfall" definitely merits a viewing. While it does take some liberties with some facts (though never drifting into Oliver Stone historical revisionism territory), it's probably the closest anyone's going to come to accurately depicting what was really going on in those final days underneath the Reichchancellary. Bruno Ganz' comments on the DVD about playing Hitler are also pretty revelatory.

In regards to the Hitler video. For those who are not up on really detailed WW II history or lack German, let me summarize. The Russians are essentially at the gates of Berlin. Hitler and company are in the bunker. The folks briefing him are essentially saying this is the end and no clever strategy is going to help at all. Hitler dismisses them all except for Jodl (high mucky muck general) and two others whose names I did not catch. Now Hitler starts going really bonkers. He essentially blames all the crap that is his fault on the German people saying that the German people betrayed him and Germany and its people should be destroyed. He blames the soldiers and the Generals defend the soldiers. Hitler flames at them. He wants the whole country destroyed rather than surrender.

I don't think so. Any thing about Hitler will bring on an immediate emotional reaction but I am being objective in analyzing this video. Clinton seems to be following the pattern in the video but I don't think she will.

I hope that Clinton is rational enough (and she shows denial not insanity) not to bring the entire Democratic party down around her ears. If she is caught blaming the voters or the American people and if Obama loses the general election and she says that she could have won, her political career is over.

If she plays her cards right she will either be a very powerful Senator or the Governor of the State of New York.

If this follows the "Hitler" rule, all discussion will devolve into a flame war.

Both you and Seth Godin mention the "Time Tube" thing today. What both of you seem to have missed is just how sucky their search algorithm is. Either that or they're filtering by number of views or some such and aren't saying anything about the filter.

I searched in a number of ways to see if any of my vids came up on the timeline. Nope. So you can see YouTube vids in a "cool" new interface... but not all of them on whatever you search for.

This is an improvement?

Michael, I'd seen the Hitler subtitles meme in connection with video game stuff but since clicking this one suddenly I'm seeing it in a lot of different contexts.

Darren, I'm from New Hampshire, they say wicked there too. We also did a John Stark play in the fourth grade. I had one line: "I cannot go for I have no shoes!" It was Tony-worthy.

Howlin', I didn't try a personal search I just did general searches. It's really only an improvement in that we've never seen it displayed like that. Maybe someone will come up with an improved version.

Regardless of what his chances are, I'm writing Ron Paul in for President. For once in my life I am going to vote for who I think would make the best president, not who I think has the best chance to win. Voting for someone who has the best chance of winning while compromising your values, beliefs, or morals is , in my opinion really wasting your vote. And in 2 years when all of you are saying "WTF? He said he wouldn't raise taxes!" I will at least know I tried to make a difference.
