I know I will get hammered for this. You said "whatever makes things easier for a rape victim can only be good." Never underestimate the power of the law of unintended consequences. Rape is a mortally serious accusation with a high presumption of guilt in the public eye. (Duke lacrosse team?) Let's be thoughtful and cautious.

Mike, that touches on what I find weird about the kit. Unless it tests for something I'm not aware of, it doesn't prove rape, it just proves sexual contact. I'm not even sure it proves sex. That's why I say it seems like the harder part for a rape victim is the psychological recovery and the rigors of the trial.

That said, I don't really see how a kit would make false accusations more likely. The only thing this changes in terms of accusations, as far as I can tell, is if the guy denies flat out having had sexual contact of any sort with the woman.

I'm trying to think if there's a way to fake the kit entirely, but that would require so much effort that a person with that much determination probably wouldn't need a kit to make a fake accusation.

Unless I misunderstand, the Jane Doe rape kit is exactly the same kit currently in use, administered by medical personnel in the same hospitals/clinics, the only difference being that the tests are done anonymously unless the alleged victim elects to press charges.

Will, there is a move on the part of our gov't to require all research produced with gov't funds to be made freely available to the public. In the meantime, there are quite a few journals whose contents are free. See www.pubmedcentral.com for free biological science/life science articles.
